Few locations on Earth inspire as much mystery and speculation as England’s Stonehenge. Yet, few people know that deep in the Southern Russian countryside lies a similarly fascinating archeological riddle.
Recently, the 4,000-year-old settlement, named Arkaim, got even more puzzling when researchers unearthed something there that didn’t look like it came from this Earth.
In Southern Russia, just past the Ural Mountains, lies the site very similar to England’s Stonehenge. What was recently discovered there, however, had UFO enthusiasts rushing to take a closer look.
Researcher Maria Makurova and her team were able to unearth a remarkably well-preserved skeleton in the ground beneath the site. What some have found curious about it, however, was the shape of the skull.
The skull is elongated, which has given rise to the belief from some that we’re looking at something from another planet.
Unfortunately for the UFO-lovers out there, the research team disagrees. It’s suspected that the skeleton belongs to a woman from the Sarmati tribe, which lived in what is now Ukraine, Southern Russia, and Kazakhstan about 2,000 years ago.
“Her skull was elongated because the tribe did so by tying up the heads of their children with rope. It was clearly a tradition in the tribe,” said Makurova.
Still, it’s an incredible find that is going to offer an amazing glimpse into life thousands of years in the past.
